Brakes Required is in development. Playtest builds are published on GitHub. Expect rough edges – and please tell me what you find.

Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.

  1. Download BrakesRequired-<version>-win64.zip.
  2. Unzip it into an empty folder.
  3. Start BrakesRequired.exe. If SmartScreen warns, choose “More info”, then “Run anyway” (the build has no code signature).

Windows 11 with Smart App Control turned on blocks the game without a “Run anyway” button, because it is not code-signed yet. The only way around it is to turn Smart App Control off: Windows Security → App & browser control → Smart App Control settings → Off. On some Windows versions it can only be turned on again by reinstalling Windows, so decide that for yourself.

macOS

macOS 11 or newer on Apple silicon, macOS 10.15 or newer on Intel.

  1. Download BrakesRequired-<version>-macos.dmg.
  2. Open the DMG and drag Brakes Required onto Applications.
  3. The build is not notarized, so macOS blocks the first start. Close the message, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the note about Brakes Required, choose “Open Anyway” and confirm with your password or Touch ID.

Linux New

64-bit x86 with Vulkan graphics drivers. New and less tested than Windows and macOS.

  1. Download BrakesRequired-<version>-linux-x86_64.tar.gz.
  2. Unpack it into an empty folder.
  3. Start ./BrakesRequired.x86_64 (from a file manager or a terminal).

Or as a Flatpak: download BrakesRequired-<version>-linux-x86_64.flatpak, then run “flatpak install --user <file>” and “flatpak run games.dremet.BrakesRequired”. Needs the Flathub remote for the runtime. It keeps its own saves (asks for a nickname again) and does not update itself.

Found a problem?

The game shows its version in the bottom left corner; click it and press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on macOS) to copy it. Include that string when you report a problem on Discord or as a GitHub issue.
